The Music Alive Weekend at the Dirty Dog was not only filled with good music...but there is a really cool video interview coming out of that as well. Angel Skye developed some really deep questions for fans of Drastik IV as well as the band and we caught those questions on video.. I am currently working on the final edit and will insert the link on this write up when done as well as blow it out through YouTube, Facebook, and Tumblr.
The Dirty Dog (https://dirtydogbar.com/) is still my favorite place in the heart of the Austin, Texas down town music entertainment district. Located right on 6th St in the middle of all that is good and evil, LOL!
First band up this evening was The Taking (https://www.facebook.com/thetakingband) from San Antonio. Angel and myself were both very impressed by the sound of the band. It was what you wanted to go see if you were going to see a metal band. Although the crowd hadn't filtered in yet, we still made it a point to let the band know we liked their stuff in between every song. As I said, the music was a modern metal, screamo style...but without the gutturals. As a fan of music and live performances I can say that Angel and I kept waiting for the second vocals to kick in, sadly no. The lead singer did a good job, but there were some points were I cringed a slight bit. It was live and that is what you have to love about a live performance. I would guess these guys are fairly new and can see that more time gigging in front of the crowd and doing more shows will tighten this group up. Towards the end of the set the lead singer definitely loosened up or became more comfortable on the stage and was definitely killing it by the end. I will also say it is a great thing when the band gets off stage and makes the rounds through the crowd, thanking people for being there and enjoying it. We enjoyed it, and we appreciated the acknowledgment. Can't wait to see what they drop for an album and hope they cruise through Austin again. We will be there!
Waterparks (https://www.facebook.com/Waterparks) sorry guys. Due to a camera malfunction and a 45 minute walk to the car for the back up, we missed your set. BUT, Angel Skye picked up a copy of your disc and loves it. I was totally blown away and didn't expect the cool shit I heard on the way home that night. Sad, so sad, that we missed the performance even more after hearing the disc. Please let me know when you are gonna be Austin ways again. We would love to come see you and do a review of the performance, and try to bring a crowd with us as well.
Cosmic Wolf (https://www.facebook.com/cosmicwolftheband) is from here in Austin. This was as diverse a metal band as you can get. With a freaky, amazing lead guitarist from Las Vegas (score!) and a charismatic lead singer, the combination was stunning. Kicking in some really heavy, bluesy type songs and jamming some great rock in your ear drums throughout Cosmic Wolf is not way out there, but they are pretty damn deep! I was really shocked at the length of their set and how well it was put together. From the jump off to the last licks, these guys have their set list designed to keep you in the music the whole time. Great stuff, look forward to catching these guys as I hope they rock Austin frequently.
Okay, now for the elephant in the room! Yes, Drastik IV (https://www.facebook.com/drastikmusic) took the stage in support of their debut album 'Wrath of the Underdog'. It is a great album available at all of you major online music ports, so get it! I really love seeing this band, as the front man is in your face and all about the performance the whole time. He makes a show of it for damn sure. These are some guys that you expect and would love to see on the Warped tour or even better, The MAYHEM FESTIVAL. Lets hope this happens. They cross the lyrical styling of...say...Rage...with their own blend of metal and really cool fucking vocal themes. The drummer is the most charismatic and animated drummer since Tommy Lee and dare I say, reasonably much better! The bass and lead guitarist are not to be left out as they are in constant motion throughout the bands performance. Look, it is simply like this, when you have a group of guys that love what they do, and love doing it in front of a crowd, it infects you, draws you in, and leaves you exhausted and happy you were there in the end.

#GetWrecked - a seedy release party
It was a seedy release...party! Okay, it really wasn't that seedy, it was more like a CD Release party! and another damn fine event held by my friends at the One 2 One (http://www.one2onebar.com/) on S. Lamar.
The Cody Bryan Band (http://codybryanmusic.com/main.php) have broken out with their debut CD in great fashion. A Twitter campaign (@codybryanband, #getwrecked, #wreckme), a Facebook contest to create the 'WRECK ME' adult beverage starring their own sponsor Dripping Springs Vodka (http://drippingspringsvodka.com/index.php/a-few-of-our-favorite-things/), the winner was Dripping Springs vodka and grapefruit juice - YES that shit will get you wrecked for damn sure, and even an appearance on the local television morning show Good Day Austin (http://www.myfoxaustin.com/story/22194212/cody-bryan-band). All in all I would say it was a great night, great fun, and a great album!

I posted a blog write up a short time ago about the Kenny Chesney show for the debut of the Austin360 Amphitheater (http://livemusicinaustin.blogspot.com/2013/04/shared-experiences-kenny-chesney.html), what I didn't talk about (and owe a write up for) is the after hours experience. The Cody Bryan Band was performing at The Saxon Pub at 11 pm that same evening. Not knowing what time the Chesney show would end and more importantly could we make the drive and make it worthwhile? Yes, Yes, YES!!! Out of the A360 Theater we flew and to S Lamar we went. Walking in the door and chatting with the doorman for a hot second and there we were. With only a song or two into their set, we proceeded to enjoy.
Here is where the #GetWrecked part comes in...
So, some beverages at the A360 Amphitheater and then a few more at Saxon, I had to make the trip to the men's room. To the back I go, OH WATCH OUT! THERE ARE STAIRS! Yeah, I know this, but my feet decided "Ehhh, what the fuck! We are just gonna skip that step right there. YEAH , that one!" I missed the step and down I went...the wreckage to my right knee will live on the Internet forever here (http://livemusicinaustin.tumblr.com/post/47373837615/this-is-getwrecked-codybryanband-show-talk). I posted that on Tumblr and then Tweeted the band with the hashtag #GetWrecked...Taaaa Daaaa! there it is. With the debut album called 'Wreck Me' and the fun at their sneak performance at the Saxon.... it was inevitable, it was funny, and most importantly it fits and makes sense.
Moving forward to the CD release party at One2One. Definitely a favorite place of mine. Easy to get to, whether it is your starting point for an evening or the stopping point. There is ALWAYS great music, low cover charge (it's for the bands so don't bitch), and the staff is wonderful to deal with. Tonite we (two)stepped in the door to catch the tail end of Moonlight Social (http://moonlightsocialmusic.com/). I wrote about them (http://livemusicinaustin.blogspot.com/2011/08/hot-sauce-and-moonlight-social.htm) from August of 2011. That's right, damn near 2 years ago! Although it was somewhat a fluffy write up, the statements I made are true and have happened. The band has grown up on the road quite a bit. Polished up the sound and really can turn the crowd now. It was wonderful. The music and lyrics are paired wonderfully. The chemistry is stunning, the band enjoys being on stage for a crowd, and this evening there was a great crowd to appreciate their appearance. With a really good video under their belt and a cool debut album, Moonlight Social is in a great position to move up, on, and forward.
Cody Bryan Band took the stage after a short intro from longtime friend of Cody Bryan, AJ. The band took their turn in the spotlight. No, this is obviously not their first performance, but lets just say it was their birth. All of the other performances were the sonogram pictures leading up to this moment. I posted a ridiculously long comment on their FB page after this debut show and will repeat some of that now.
The journey for Cody Bryan Band has been just that, a journey. In fact, as I mentioned, it has started with this night. The original incarnation was Aimless Gun. With an EP release February 13, 2010 at One2One on 5th St and then a full length album there after. Aimless Gun was a rocking band. HOWEVER, from the first time I heard them, the live performance that ASkye wrote a blog about (http://livemusicinaustin.blogspot.com/2012/07/the-best-fourth-of-july-on-3rd-ever.html - you really have to reread this one..I am prejudiced...it is an awesome write up!) July 2010, to the release of the Aimless Gun full length album. Everyone I talked to asked "Are they country?" "NO!" was always the definitive answer. The truth now comes out, although Aimless Gun was a rockin band, it had the spirit of country music and somehow we all knew.
With the announcement that the name would change, the addition of keys (Cole Gramling), and a new album would follow of...GASP!...country music. It was inevitable and now it is fun. One of the most fun and entertaining nights in quite a while. With Ms Cruz snapping the pictures, it was easy for me to watch the crowd have every bit a good time as I. It was a packed house, hard to move around in, but damn if they weren't dancing down in front. AND Yes, I enjoyed a spin with my girlfriend.
I love it when a band does their thing onstage and are joined during the set by a special guest. For all in the audience, it was the beautiful vocals and beautiful looking Jennica Scott from Moonlight Social, joining the band on stage for a tune or two. WOW! Not only has the Cody Bryan Band really learned from all of their performances, grown from the experiences over the last few years, and polished the sound to diamond like qualities, but with the addition of female vocals...MAN THIS IS SO PERFECT! I am glad that she joined them onstage. From a fan perspective I am saying we (I) want more of that on a regular basis. Take some of those old Aimless songs, re-tool them, add some female vocals, and work them in! As a friend of the band...add some female vocals in and work it into the show! For me it is all about the live performance, and that would be fantastic.
For the CD 'Wreck Me' (Amazon, iTunes, and Waterloo Records), do yourself a favor, go pick up your copy. Listen to it, enjoy it, and I dare you to single out 1 song as your favorite...not gonna happen! As I listen to it on repeat, I am trying to figure out which song is going to be their first hit single. Will it be the title track 'Wreck Me', the wedding song 'When we were made', or the weekend anthem 'That's why God made Saturday night'? Take your turn, enjoy the tunes and cast your vote for favorite on the Cody Bryan Band FB page.

WOW, so here I am two days later, lets talk. The Party for overlord was another awesome show. I had the pleasure of introducing new peoples to Ovey, his music, and his live show. A couple of coworkers had fun (of course) and even my nephew, who drove 3 hrs from Corpus Christi, had to be at the record release party. He has been waiting 2 yrs to get into an Overlord show (since the last time we saw Ovey through the window of another club on 07/04/2007).
DJ Abe the Assassin was in the house and he was very impressive (like anyone who knows him would be surprised at his skills).
Ryan Harkrider was the first musical performance of the evening. Now Ryan even acknowledged that his skills as a rapper were not up to par with Ovey (jk- totally different stylings altogether), but DAMN dude, you definitely have some serious song writing skills. Ryans female vocal accompaniment was also amazing. Her vocal fill was just wonderful and perfect for Ryan's set. I was dissapointed that my daughter was not with me to see Ryan because I have no doubt she would've been busting my chops to meet Ryan and get a CD. Ryan did advise me that he is working on getting a CD out in May, I believe?
OH Wait! MC Overlord performed also. The opening was the presentation of Ovey's new video. Ovey gave a brief explanation and props to the director and Mike Dill (who was also in the house).
-The Video- Yo, I gots to have this for my collection. This was great! It was so efffing hilarious and a great view of 'A day in the life of...'. The actual videography was really good to. Fantastic use of the split screen at the beginning.
-The Show- Well I am soooooo so so pissed off at myself. I don't ever have a problem recording the show with my litlle digital camera (just to document it, that's why!). I didn't think about it this time and didn't bother with it....WHAT A DUMB ASS!! Overlord opened the show with Jay Z "99 Problems". I am a fan of Jay Z, have the song on CD and MP3. Jay Z has never done this song this bad ass! Made the whole damn night worth it! What else can I say about the rest of the show, you should've been there. If you were, you know what I mean.
Thanks for Another great show. Looking forward to regular Thursday gigs at The Dirty Dog!!!
